Dora, sitting enthroned, said, “Doc, play some of that nice music. The whiskey was gone and Doc brought out the gallons of wine. Now the food set the party into a kind of rich digestive sadness. Dora Flood, the stately orange-haired bordello madame, eventually senses Doc’s mood and requests a music change: Responding to the music, people begin to dance, eat, and get into the occasional fistfight. Things relax as more guests arrive, however, and eventually Mack plays some Benny Goodman records. In Doc’s case, the party starts on a note of awkwardness as Mack and the boys arrive to present him with gifts. “And it is also generally understood that a party hardly ever goes the way it is planned or intended.” “It is, however, generally understood that a party has a pathology, that it is a kind of an individual and that it is likely to be a very perverse individual,” he adds. Just before the party guests begin to arrive at Doc’s place, Steinbeck interjects a mock-philosophical observation that the science of parties is somewhat imperfect. And then the street light in front of the Bear Flag came on. He could see the neon light of La Ida blinking on and off. And he compromised with the Moonlight Sonata. But what was wrong with the sweet and sickly mood? It was rather pleasant. That would snap him out of the sweet and sickly mood he was getting into. When it was done he got another whiskey and he debated in his mind about the Brandenburg. Once he’s finished listening to Ravel, Doc considers lightening his mood with some Bach, but instead chooses to double-down with Beethoven’s haunting piano composition: There was part of the music that reminded him of that picture. The observers in Athens before Marathon reported seeing a great line of dust crossing the Plain, and they heard the clash of arms and they heard the Eleusinian Chant. There was a passage in it that reminded him of something else. Reveling in the mood of the somber processional, Doc plays a choreographic symphony by the composer:Īnd because of his feeling he went on with Daphnis and Chloe. He played the Pavane to a Dead Princess and felt sentimental and a little sad. It seemed a nice thing to him that they would give him a party. Over at the laboratory, Doc had a little whiskey after his beer. Later in the book, when Doc has clued in to the fact that his friends plan to throw him another party, he hides his breakables, enjoys a drink, and plays some Ravel before guests arrive: Mack sat perfectly still, almost as though he could hear the music too. Doc saw Mack’s broken mouth through the music, the music that was in his head and in the air. In Doc’s head the mono-tonal opening of Monteverdi’s Hor ch’ el Ciel e la Terra began to form, the infinitely sad and resigned mourning of Petrarch for Laura. He didn’t even wipe away the blood that flowed down his chin. Mack sat down in a chair and looked at him. So, instead, the music plays out in Doc’s mind: This is because his record player was destroyed when Mack - who Steinbeck characterizes as “the elder, leader, mentor…of a little group of men who had in common no families, no money, and no ambitions” - threw a disastrous party at Doc’s house when Doc was not there. In this way I was able to enjoy an already beloved book on an even deeper level, and, in the interest of offering other readers the same experience, I’ve put together a guide to Doc’s music here.ĭoc doesn’t actually play this madrigal, which is based on a sonnet by Petrarch (and translates, roughly, to “At the Time of Heaven and Earth”). This melancholy often plays out in Doc’s choice of music, and I didn’t pay much attention to the specific textures of this music until I reread the book (for probably the sixth or seventh time) a couple years ago and cross-referenced songs and composers online. But his charm is offset by a deep sense of melancholy that gives the book’s climactic house-party a wistful, introspective edge. The book plays out in a series of vignettes that - when boiled down to their essence - involve a group of vagrants trying (and failing, and then trying again) to throw a party for a kind-hearted, quietly charismatic marine biologist named Doc.ĭoc, who is modeled on Steinbeck’s real-life friend Ed Ricketts, has eclectic intellectual interests, an understated sense for the absurd, and no shortage of friends. It’s hard to pin down a plot in Cannery Row, which is part of the charm of reading it. John Steinbeck’s gentle depiction of Depression-era ne’er-do-wells in Monterey, California doesn’t typically appear on lists of great American novels (and Steinbeck himself is better known for works like The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men), but every few years I find myself returning to the book, its characters, and its understated evocation of joy. Cannery Row has been one of my favorite books ever since I first read it as a teenager.

I keep an eye on them for any obvious problems, but what I'm really interested in is how fast the temps go down after the stress test. Here is where the previously mentioned temp monitor comes in. I usually select the number of threads to match the number of cpu cores. You'll get a feel for this (# of digits, turns, and threads) after a while. Generally, I select options that will get the machine “breathing hard” for several minutes. SST uses various algorithms to calculate pi up to 128 million digits. Pmagic includes a program called System Stability Tester (System Tools > System Stability Tester). Unplug the cable and then click on the Network Icon in the tray at the bottom right of the screen (probably has a red "X" if you unplugged the network cable), and connect to a wireless network.įinally, it's stress test time. Plug in a network cable and test for functionality with a web browser. After selecting the appropriate drive, I look for red or pink shaded tabs indicating potential issues and perform the standard short and extended self tests. I then fire up GSmartControl (the Disk Health icon on the Desktop) to check the hard disk. Then I start a graphical temperature monitor (System Tools > Psensor) as I will be watching temps during the remaining procedures. Browse the hardware if you like, then click Save, and save the information to your flash drive as a text file (or alternate format if you prefer). In the “Start Menu” go to System Tools > LSHW, and refresh the list after it opens. Next, I'll generate a list of all of the current hardware (the linux kernel is very good at recognizing most hardware). Usually, the first thing I do is plug in a thumb drive and mount it (use the disk icon in the taskbar), so that I can store any reports or screenshots during the process. Next, its on to the bench and Parted Magic.īoot Pmagic via you preferred method, and you'll be presented with this desktop: I just wanted to give a quick overview to some of the features included with Pmagic, and how they can be used for hardware diagnostics and testing.Īfter I check in a computer from a customer, the first thing I do is give it a good cleaning, inside and out, followed by a thorough visual inspection (fan operation, capacitors bulging, cables secure, etc). When combined with PXE (see this excellent thread for more info), Pmagic becomes even better! Never fear though, if you don't currently have a PXE server, you can always boot from a CD or USB device, its just going to be a little slower to load into memory. I find it incredibly well suited for so many things (hardware testing and diagnosis, data recovery, cloning / imaging, disk partitioning.). This has become my tool of choice for many tasks. I'm sure many of you also use Parted Magic on a regular basis. This is by no means an exhaustive procedure, but I find that it provides a good foundation for testing and diagnosis, especially for smaller shops, or those operating with limited resources. I'm sure everyone has their own procedures and checklists, but I just wanted to share my experience using Parted Magic for this task. Testing hardware and performing hardware diagnostics is something that we all frequently do. Of all the investment apps, Acorns is great because it finds investment dollars for you. The Stash app is also full of educational content for people looking to understand what it means to invest and what all of the jargon actually means. Stash simplifies the process of selecting investments with an app suited for beginners. No affiliation or conflicts of interest here other than being impressed with their name choice. To be super clear, right off the bat, we are not Stash. And lower fees on the app means more money in your pocket (eventually). Although their offerings may not be as robust as some other brokerages, Robinhood has some of the lowest costs in the industry. The insane nostalgia the name “Robinhood” brings is second only to the commission-free stock, ETF, and options trades. There are plenty of other apps out there that help you to get started with investing if you decide to move forward with a robo-advisor, but these are the three we’re breaking down for you. Shall we?ĭisclaimer: we chose these three apps because they are the apps we are most frequently asked about, they’re in the top 5 in the app store, and they’ve been in the news a ton lately. We’ll get to the warnings a little later, but let’s start off on the right foot with the good that each of the top three investing apps bring to the table. In short, robo-advisors don’t really advise as much as they compute. A typical robo-advisor collects information from clients about their financial situation and future goals through an online survey, and then uses the data to offer advice and automatically invest client assets. You’ve probably heard the term “robo-advisor” thrown around a lot recently.Īccording to Investopedia (the financial Merriam Webster), robo-advisors are digital platforms that provide automated, algorithm-driven financial planning services with little to no human supervision. An investment app is a robo-advisor that customizes a portfolio for you based on your goals and risk. So, let’s start with what the hell an investment app is in the first place. We’re sharing our professional opinion on some of the most popular investing apps out there. And well played doing a little research before hopping on the bandwagon of whoever is #1 in the app store right now. But you know there are better options out there when you’re ready to step up.īut any kind of start is better than not starting, so nicely done. Technically, the dust is no longer present. Because, technically, your finances are being serviced with an app. Investment apps like Robinhood, Stash, and Acorns.īut first, let’s take a second to break down what we mean by financial services. And by low touch, we’re referring to investment apps. Given we’re a more high-touch financial services option for millennials, we thought we’d give you a lay of the land when it comes to a few of the low-touch financial services options. Note that you won’t have to pay for updates or DLC or anything like that, once you get the game, it’s yours, and any update that’s released after that you will receive for free.” We believe the price should reflect the state of the game, so if you buy it earlier, you’ll be paying less than someone who’d get it at a later stage. If you buy the game early, you’re buying a game with less features than people who’re buying it later. Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access? It’s just that the game isn’t as big as we’d like it to be, and that there are a few non-essential features missing that players have come to expect from bigger games.” “RUMBLE is a fully playable game with multiple modes to play, a friend system, progression, tutorial systems, configurable options, the works. What is the current state of the Early Access version? But we will also dedicate our efforts to developing the features the community wants most, what those features end up being is naturally up to you guys.” There are some features we already know we’re going to implement, such as character customization and Steam achievement. How exactly the game will differ from its first release is partially up to you. Graphical and audio improvements will also be rolled out in the process of getting to the final version. “The final version of the game will have expanded versions of existing features, as well as several entirely new features. How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version? We intend to gradually build the game up to a full release, updating it with individual additions as time goes on.” But that doesn’t mean there won’t be updates within that time, on the contrary. A healthy amount of feedback is invaluable to us, and we figured making the game available to play at an early stage would be a good way to get it.”Īpproximately how long will this game be in Early Access? Because of this, we’d like to involve an active community in development as much as we can. “We’ve never made a game like this before, we think it’s even one of the first of its kind. So I tried to download a new(er) version for my iPad mini. In my case I'd already purchased Pages for iPad back in 2014, for $10, in addition to my buying it as part of iWork '08 AND iWork '09 on the Mac. I like to be prepared!Ĭlick to expand.Hello NoBoMac, that's an interesting idea, so I tried it! This is similar to what Apple has done with their hidden recovery partition, but mine is loaded with more apps for repairing & managing disks, like DiskWarrior and Carbon Copy Cloner. Currently I've got the SSD split into two equal partitions for the old and new systems, and one of the partitions of my physical hard drive is a 25 GB bootable partition I call "LifeBoat", which is an emergency boot drive loaded with disk repair utilities. This old 2012 MacBook Pro supports two internal drives (one in the old optical drive slot), so I've got a 2TB hard drive in one and a 500 GB SSD in the other. For the moment I can boot into either the new or the old, and I'm aiming to make a bootable backup of the bare-bones Catalina (which is currently only 17.4 GB) before I invoke the migration assistant, and finally say goodbye to 10.12 Sierra. It's nice to have your mas solution as a backup, but my iWork '09 serial number OUGHT to be adequate proof.īy the way, I'm really glad I have a separate partition for the new OS. I think I'll try another chat with an Apple Rep, in the hope that they'll acknowledge my past purchase of iWork within the app store. I told her explicitly that I'd purchased iWork before the app store existed, but maybe she didn't realize that the app store would therefore have no record of my owning iWork. The apple rep I'd spoken to was wrong on both counts: iWork wasn't downloaded automatically, and once I'd booted into Catalina the app store there gave me error messages that I'd need to upgrade to MacOS 11 before I'd be able to get any of the iWork apps. So I ended up using perhaps the same stub installer that you did, from the app store. I've also installed my iWork '09 apps into the virtual machine I've already got for running Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6.8).Ĭlick to expand. My installation ground to a halt because I'd downloaded the installer from a website called ISORIVER, and it didn't pass the security checks: "the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed." I'll do this on a blank partition, to avoid any risk to my working bootable partition. Since arranging for a strong and stable internet connection for a day would involve a lot of delays and effort, I'm going to try a clean installation from the installer I have, and see what I end up with. She also said that some installers would include all the needed files, while others would need to download things. Maybe some methods of invoking the upgrade would work while others wouldn't, but she didn't give any particular instructions for this, other than insuring a good internet connection. It sounds like her claim is contradicted by your experience of upgrading to Catalina, since you didn't automatically end up with the iWork apps installed after the upgrade. Unfortunately my only internet connection is through a cell phone network, which has reasonable speeds but maxes out at 3 GB per day! Her comment to that was: "That might not work." During a recent bit of travel I'd made a point of downloading a Catalina installer, which weighs in at 8.1 GB. I asked her specifically if the iWork apps were built into the installer, and she replied that was correct, but I'd need a strong and stable WiFi or cable connection. She told me that during the update of Mac OS to Catalina, it will also install all the iWork apps that are compatible with the new Mac OS. I have an update about another approach that's supposed to work, according to an Apple representative that I had a long digital chat with. Hello Troyf, and thanks a lot for sharing this solution - it looks very promising! |
